A sunset on the Indian Ocean is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 23 crew member on the International Space Station (ISS). The image presents an edge-on, or limb view, of Earth's atmosphere as seen from orbit. The Earth's curvature is visible along the horizon line, or limb, that extends across the image from center left to lower right. Above the darkened surface of Earth, a brilliant sequence of colors roughly denotes several layers of the atmosphere. Deep oranges and yellows are visible in the troposphere that extends from Earth's surface to 6-20 kilometers high. This layer contains over 80 percent of the mass of the atmosphere and almost all of the water vapor, clouds, and precipitation -- several dark cloud layers are visible within this layer. Variations in the colors are due mainly to varying concentrations of either clouds or aerosols (airborne particles or droplets). The pink to white region above the clouds appears to be the stratosphere; this atmospheric layer generally has little or no clouds and extends up to approximately 50 kilometers above Earth's surface. Above the stratosphere blue layers mark the upper atmosphere (including the mesosphere, thermosphere, ionosphere, and exosphere) as it gradually fades into the blackness of outer space. The ISS was located over the southern Indian Ocean when this image was taken, with the observer looking towards the west. Crew members aboard the space station see 16 sunrises and sunsets per day due to their high orbital velocity (greater than 28,000 kilometers per hour). The multiple chances for photography are fortunate, as at that speed each sunrise/sunset event only lasts a few seconds.

The legendary venue Ocean, which once put on gigs, but like a lot of Hackney's most august institutions, it closed after extensive renovation. It was built in 1907 as the Central Library, which has a new building on the other side of the road. It reopened again around the time this photo was taken, hosting the occasional event or two. As of October 2011, it's become the Hackney PictureHouse, a cinema. (View of front door.)

View On Black

Well after the celebrations yesterday of passing 250,000 views on my photostream I thought a nice gentle abstract landscape/seascape would be just what the doctor would order! Many thanks to all of you who viewed my stream yesterday - over 1,000 views yesterday which helped alot to pass this landmark!

So what does the next 250,000 look like? Well I think I will perserver with landscapes, seascapes, light painting and maybe a bit more dabbling in portrait work; really feel like to understand light and people more! So thank you for all your encouragement, I have found flickr committments quite hard to keep this year as now back working full time! Plus with lots of travel committments it's challenging to say the least - "the least". But I will try as hard as possible to keep visiting all your photostreams and view your amazing work!

This rocky ocean beach is located on the Atlantic shore of Puerto Cruz de Tenerife. This picture was created for my motivational friend epSos.de and can be used for FREE.

The stones protect the island from the big waves that hit the ground. As the huge storm waves meet the rocks the earth shakes with a loud sound of crushing boulders which move into the water and back to land as they are washed onto the rocky beach surface in the large ocean waves.

epSos.de was brave enough to take this picture, despite the danger of being sucked into the water by the surprisingly strong Atlantic waves. This pyramid of stones was made artificially as a symbol of progress, growth and prosperity.

The cruise ship "Ocean Glory 1" (Ex "Aegean Spirit") in Dover harbour on 8th August 2001. The ship had been prevented from leaving Dover after failing a safety inspection. Inspectors discovered the crew did not speak enough English to carry out a fire drill. Escape routes were blocked, radio equipment broken and engine room pumps were leaking. There was no fire extinguisher in the engine room where machinery was leaking fuel. There were also hygiene problems in the galley, including cockroaches.
A few weeks after this picture was taken the ship sailed on its final journey, to Alang for scrapping.

From a dry run for a docent-led walk entitled “Walk Along the Edge” ccnha.org/awn/descrip.html#281 Walk Along the Edge: Explore the bluffs and beach along Estero Bay as we examine the feeding relationships of the animals we'll see. Bring binoculars, wear sturdy beach shoes and layered clothing. Meet in the dirt parking lot (by the fig tree) one mile north of the end of the divided section of Highway 1, north of Cayucos, CA. Moderate. 2 mi., 2.5 hr., normally by Norma Wightman, Estero Bluffs, Cayucos, CA.

The Ocean of Light project explores the creative and immersive possibilities of light-based visualization in physical space. It uses hardware to create dynamic, interactive and three-dimensional sculptures from light. Surface, the first artwork to be exhibited using the Ocean of Light hardware, is a responsive virtual eco-system that occupies physical space. This space is dominated by a virtual surface, the boundary between two fluid virtual materials. These are affected by sound, nearby noise creates waves that ripple across the surface, but can also trigger luminous blasts. The result is an interconnected environment, overlapping physical and virtual spaces that coexist and are aware of each other.

Ocean Grove, New Jersy is a historic summer community immediately south of Asbury Park on the Shore. It was built in 1869 as a Methodist camp meeting and, like other planned Methodist communities of the era, has one of the best collections of Victorian architecture anywhere. While the camp meeting association and traditions like closing the beach on Sunday mornings remain, the place now appears to provide a variety of both religious and secular activities. Despite Ocean Grove's unique identity, it is actually unincorporated and instead part of a larger township.

This turreted gem has a location on the perfect corner where the grand Ocean Pathway meets the beach.
